About Berclair Baptist Church
Berclair Baptist Church began as a Mission of the Union Avenue Baptist Church. The group first met in a store building on Summer and Berclair Road, September 9, 1929. Dr. D. A. Ellis preached this first service and according to Mr. John Beaty there were 70 people in attendance. Following the service, the people made it known that they wanted to have a Sunday School each Sunday.
The Lord blessed the efforts of these dedicated men and women and the Sunday School grew in attendance. The people's interest increased until they faced the realization that another building would be needed. This resulted in Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Hester giving the congregation a lot on Novarese Road, north of Summer Avenue. The men of the mission and other volunteers erected a building. This building served until 1950 when the building, now known as the J. R. Hester Chapel, was erected at the comer of Summer Avenue and North Perkins.
The mission was organized into a church on June 12, 1930, with 22 Charter members. On the following Sunday the doors of the church were still open to receive Charter members and four more united with the church. The first baptism took place on June 22, 1930, in a pond located just off Summer Avenue near Five Points. On Thursday, June 29, 1930, the church assembled for the first time in the new, still unfinished, church building on Novarese.
Berclair has been the sponsor of two churches, Wells Station Baptist Church and Richland Baptist Church. Along with the sister church, Leawood Baptist, Berclair also co-sponsored Leaclair Baptist Church.
God, through His marvelous grace, has wonderfully blessed the Berclair Baptist Church since her organization 80 years ago. He has brought His people through struggles and hardships and He has been with them in times of sorrow and in times of rejoicing. Through His Son, Jesus Christ, souls have been born into the kingdom of God, and young men and women have gone out to serve Him as Lord. God has provided for all indebtedness to be completely paid.
The history of Berclair Baptist Church is to the praise of the Father who bringeth about all things He has promised. The members of Berclair are grateful for those God has sent to lead in the furtherance of the cause of Christ in this community through the years.
